Your Shar Pei and Training

Shar Pei are usually quite a dominant breed, marry this together with their intelligence and you have a dog that can read your thoughts like a book!

To train Shar Pei you will need to ascertain that you are in charge, the leader of the pack, and you need to do this from the start. A word you will hear often in the world of dog training is, hierarchy (pronounced hire-ark-ee), referring to the grading system within a group/pack. It's now a proven fact that all dogs descend from wolves, and the wolf is one of the main animals that display hierarchy tendencies.
There is no need to use any force or aggression when training, the Shar Pei will lose its confidence quickly, and worse than this, lose respect for you as their handler/owner.

Demonstrate from the beginning that you're actually 'the boss', and that your word is the last word on the subject. If you ask your Shar Pei to jump down off the couch you must ensure the command is carried out, even if they are adamant that they are staying put! When you request your Shar Pei to accomplish a simple task such as sitting, they must follow this through. Dogs do like to know their place within a pack, you and your family have now been christened as your Shar Pei pack. They become insecure if they feel as though they do not fit anywhere; a dog that knows its position is a happy dog, as they then know whom they're meant to 'ask' for guidance.

The first command your Shar Pei will probably learn is 'sit' as it's a very natural position, and also an easy one to teach at a young age.

The easiest method of training for this command is to take a small piece of their favourite treat, and ensure your Shar Pei has seen the food; raise the treat up moving slowly toward them then gradually bring the treat over the Shar Pei head. They will be so busy observing the treat in your hand he/she won't realize that their behind is now actually sitting on the floor! As they are gradually sitting just repeat the command 'sit' and praise when in the correct position and reward with the treat.

Another essential command to teach is 'stay' or 'wait' as it can prove vital when you wish your Shar Pei to stop immediately. Initially put them in the sitting position and then raise your hand so that your palm is facing the Shar Pei and your fingers are pointing skywards; say either 'stay' or 'wait' in a fairly firm voice. The second they are motionless praise and reward; the key to teaching your Shar Pei any new command is the timing. Literally the instant they perform the action that you're requesting them to, praise and reward, and implement this flamboyantly. Reminding them that you're really pleased with their performance.

The 'sit' and 'wait' command should be an essential part of every dog's training, as it shows that you, the owner, are controlling them. This can prove
